What Kinds of Hearing Protectors Do Musicians Use?

Orchestras are loud places to sit, particularly in front of the brass or beside the percussion, and many ensemble players use hearing protection in rehearsal. This page explains the equipment — what the options are and how they differ — as background for a conversation with an audiologist or hearing professional, who is the right person to advise on your hearing and fit you for devices. It is not health advice. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD, part of NIH) maintains the authoritative public reference on hearing protectors, including the types described below.

The main types

  • Foam earplugs. The inexpensive drugstore kind, compressed and inserted to expand in the ear canal. They reduce sound substantially but unevenly across frequencies — high frequencies are cut more than lows — which is why music through foam plugs sounds muffled and why many musicians find them hard to play with.
  • Pre-molded and reusable earplugs. Silicone or rubber plugs in standard sizes. Similar trade-offs to foam, in a washable, reusable form.
  • Musician's earplugs. Designed specifically for people who need to hear music accurately while reducing its level. Per the NIDCD's overview, these are engineered to reduce sound more evenly across frequencies, so music keeps its balance — quieter, but not muffled. They come as one-size universal versions and as custom-molded versions made from an impression of your ear, typically fitted through an audiologist.
  • Earmuffs. Cups that cover the entire outer ear. Rare on stage for obvious practical reasons, but common for related work such as running power tools when building sets or working close to very loud sources.

How protectors are specified

Hearing protectors sold in the U.S. carry a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR), a labeled number describing sound reduction measured under laboratory conditions. Two things about that number are worth understanding as a buyer: it is a laboratory figure, so real-world reduction depends heavily on fit and consistent use, and a higher number is not automatically better for a musician — the evenness of reduction across frequencies matters as much as the amount, which is the entire design point of musician's earplugs. Custom-molded devices are also specified by the filter inserted into them; interchangeable filters offer different amounts of reduction in the same molded shell.
